Kaya Scodelario: Yeah, definitely I remember seeing Keira’s character Elizabeth in the first movie when I was about 13. We spoke with the actress recently in Los Angeles about working with Depp, Thwaites, Javier Bardem and Geoffrey Rush in the new Pirates film, what she did to make Carina come to life for her and the highs and lows of the difficult and expensive production. It’s the biggest project yet for Scodelario, whose previous outings include Moon (her debut), Clash of the Titans, Wuthering Heights and The Maze Runner series (she says the third film, The Death Cure, is now back on track after a year-long delay while star Dylan O’Brien recovered from serious injuries sustained on set). The Pirates films, despite their setting, have not shied away from strong female characters in the past, with Keira Knightley and Penelope Cruz laying the groundwork for Scodelario in the series’ fifth installment. But when she falls in with the band of pirates led by Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and abetted by Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), she realizes that she is not only the smartest person on the boat but can use her knowledge to guide them all to their ultimate prize: the legendary trident that belonged to the god Poseidon. Of course, this being the 17 th century, most of the people - especially the men - she comes in contact with consider her a witch due to her knowledge of the stars and science. ![]() And while this may make keeping an accurate record of the film’s backstory difficult, it also seems oddly fitting for tales of characters who are so unapologetically freewheeling and self-mythologizing.In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, British actress Kaya Scodelario plays Carina Smyth, a fiercely intelligent and ambitious young woman whose goal is to study at university and become an astronomer. This is especially true of something like the compass, the importance of which is known to have grown from what had first been intended by the screenwriters. Owing partly to its casual relationship with history and partly to the extreme unreliability of its central character, the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series can sometimes play fast and loose with canon. However, as Sparrow is meant to be 18 years old in the flashback sequence of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, he would have to have been very young when he first met the goddess-turned-mystic. Jack’s nonplussed reaction to the gift may indicate that he had already seen the compass by this time. It’s possible that Jack did first receive the compass from Tia Dalma, but that it somehow found its way into the hands of Morgan, who only returned it to Sparrow as his death approached. Such conflicting information initially seems to be a retcon, but different conclusions can be drawn. Dalma is later revealed to be the goddess Calypso bound in a human form, so it makes sense that she would have such a supernatural object. The first explanation that is given for the strange compass is that Jack was given it as a gift by Tia Dalma. Among Sparrow’s more subtle signature possessions is a compass that purportedly points in the direction of what the user most desires. Much of this is due to the eccentricities added to the character by Johnny Depp, including eyeliner, gold teeth, and a drunken swagger, which made it to the screen in spite of early protests by Disney executives. Jack Sparrow has grown to be an iconic image of a pirate in modern pop culture. While characters unfamiliar with piracy (usually the romantic leads) serve as a proxy for the audience’s understanding, Jack Sparrow is known to be a notorious pirate by the time the first film begins and brings with him a long history of swashbuckling. Based on the Disneyland ride of the same name, Pirates of the Caribbean is a historical fantasy series that follows a loose collection of adventurers living in the Golden Age of Piracy. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales shows Jack Sparrow receiving his compass from Captain Morgan, despite the fact that it had already been mentioned that Tia Dalma gave it to him.
